Lipari

It is the largest island: its municipality gathers all the islands except that of Salina.
Interesting is the Archaeological Museum, located in the Castle of Lipari, which stands in a wide bay on the east coast, between the two inlets of Marina Lunga, and Marina Corta, still the best landing places today. The Greek acropolis and the Norman Cathedral are also splendid. Finally, do not miss a boat ride to admire splendid coves, such as that of Fico, and the beaches of Vinci, Valle Muria, Punta della Castagna and Capo Rosso.

It is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago: it has an area of about 37 sq km. Its inhabitants, called "Liparoti" are about 9,500 and populate the small villages of the island.

Formerly called Meligunis, from the Greek Melos (sweet), perhaps alluding to the climate, Lipari was a human residence since the ancient Neolithic (3500 ° BC), when people from Sicily created that civilization that was called "Sentinel Civilization" and gave the commencement of the obsidian trade throughout the Mediterranean.

The upper and fortified part "Acropolis Also known as Castle", is still today the focal point of the historic center. Within the mighty walls of the castle, built by the Spaniards, after the expulsion of the Saracens in 1556, you can see the church of S.Caterina dell'Addolorata, of the Immaculate Conception and the Cathedral dedicated to S.Bartolo, patron saint of the Aeolian Islands, built by Norman Ruggiero I.
The thing that most of all is noticed when reaching Lipari is the white expanse of pumice deposits, a gift from the Monte Pelato volcano. Another material that made Lipari famous is the Obsidian, a natural glass, typical of limited volcanic areas of gray color tending to black and was used, before the discovery of metals for the manufacture of tools and weapons as it is very sharp. Exported throughout the Mediterranean.

Lipari today has become the capital of Aeolian tourism. Of great tourist interest is the boat tour around the island and the one by land with the bus, which crosses all the villages. There is only this road and it will be possible to admire landscapes worked by the millennia and enchanting landscapes such as the scenery of Quattrocchi.
